Scripture tells us that Jesus' disciples asked Jesus "teach us to pray". It was very important then and it is very important now. As children of God, we must know how to pray. The books of Joshua and Judges tell us about a woman named Achsah that we should probably take example from. Achsah knew how to make petitions to her father that were answered successfully. A lot of times we pray using lots of words that amount to very little and although we are praying, we pray amiss. I would like to share a few things that I noticed in this story of Achsah and her father Caleb.
1. The first thing to note is her consideration of the matter. Know what you want when you go to God in prayer. As we approach the presence of God, He will direct our prayers because sometimes we just don't know what to ask for. Allow Him to assist you as you call out to Him. Pray to hear what God is saying and then pray what you hear Him say.
2. Ask someone to agree in prayer with you. Your spouse, your family, or friend, but be sure that they are in agreement with you in prayer. As you pray for others, God will bless you. Matthew 18:20 says that when two or three are gathered in my name, there I will be in the midst of them. Choose wisely.
3. Be courageous. Go to God boldy, but reverently. Don't be afraid to ask Him what you want. He's your father, not a stranger or your enemy. And more important, be ready when He says What wilt thou to tell Him what you want.
4. Finally, enjoy the success of answered prayer. The Lord “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask, or think.” Our asking or our thinking falls short; but God’s giving never does.
God is waiting for us to simply ask Him. Ask Him to save our wayward children. Ask Him to heal our body. Ask Him to make the way when you can't see a way. Ask Him to increase your finances. Ask Him for another job. Ask Him to bring clarity to your vision. Ask Him to send laborers in the vineyard. Ask Him for help. Ask Him for salvation. Ask Him for deliverance. He is waiting for you to ask. God's way of giving is through our asking. Ask Him today.
